Bert was a turtle who worked at the Bird Barn. Every morning, he'd hurry to care for the birds.
"Bert!" chirped Fern the purple bird. "The water jar is empty!"
Bert turned with a smile. "I'll fill it first thing, Fern."
Bert wore a blue shirt with silver stars on it. He carried a marker to mark which birds were served.
"The birds here are so perfect," Bert told his sister Myrtle. "They chirp and flutter all day long."
Myrtle yawned. "Birds are boring. I prefer to curl up and nap."
But Bert loved his bird friends. There was Earl the red parrot, Vern the short sparrow, and Curt the bird who could burp the alphabet!
One Thursday, Bert was serving birdseed when he heard a terrible CRASH!
"What in the world?" Bert wondered.
He hurried over to the corner of the barn. There stood Herb the turkey, covered in purple glitter!
"Herb! What happened?" Bert asked.
Herb the turkey looked nervous. "I was trying to learn to fly. I jumped from that perch up there!"
Bert stared at the high perch, then at the turkey with sparkly purple feathers.
"But where did the glitter come from?" Bert asked.
"I burst through Fern's art project!" Herb admitted. "She was making a glitter storm picture."
Just then, Fern fluttered in. She saw Herb and started to giggle.
"Herb! You look marvelous!" she chirped. "The first purple turkey ever!"
Soon all the birds were laughing. Even Myrtle woke up from her nap to see.
Bert smiled. "Working at the Bird Barn is never boring!"
